What teaching here is like
Most teaching jobs in India are structured around finishing a syllabus. Ours isn’t. The classroom belongs to the children, the teacher’s job is to set up the conditions, ask the right questions, and then mostly listen.
You will work in a multilingual classroom (Mising, Assamese, English) where many students are first-generation learners. The school year follows the rhythms of the island, floods, festivals, the harvest, and the curriculum bends around them, not the other way around.
Residential roles include accommodation on campus and meals with the children. Some teachers stay for years, some for months. We have no expectation that you commit before you know whether the work fits.
Before you apply, read how we teach and at least one piece from the Chronicle. Bipin’s “Love Letter to the Misings” is a good place to start. The application is partly a self-selection exercise; if the writing on those pages moves you, you will probably fit. If it doesn’t, it won’t, and that’s OK.
Roles we typically hire for
Whether a specific role is open right now depends on the school’s current cycle. The list below is the typical shape, current openings live on the doc the team updates.
Primary
LKG – Class 5
Generalist roles with deep relationships to a small group of children. Inquiry-led classroom design, Mising-Assamese-English language bridging, hands-on learning across subjects.
Middle School
Class 6 – Class 10
Subject specialists who can teach in inquiry mode rather than syllabus-completion mode. Particularly looking for Mathematics, Science, English, and Social Studies.
Residential
At The Hummingbird Home
Adults who can live on campus and be alongside the residential children, guiding, listening, holding the difficult conversations. Counselling background or equivalent experience preferred.
Specialist
Across grades
Theatre, visual arts, football, music, martial arts. Roles can be full-time or part-time / residency-style. We particularly value practitioners who can both teach and continue their own practice on campus.
Residency
Across grades and subjects
Shorter placements for educators who want to contribute without a full-time commitment. Bring an inquiry, run it with a class, leave the school better than you found it.
