How we learn
The Hummingbird Collective guarantees every child in Northeast India a pathway from classroom to career. Not just academic achievement. The whole person. The child who finds their domain and goes deep in it. The human being who acts for others. The maker who changes things.
Our mission
We believe that Northeast India’s most marginalised children can lead the world, but only if their education is built for that purpose. That means going far beyond academic performance. It means finding the domain where each child can be excellent, building the values to act for others, and developing the will to make things happen.

Our approach
Across every school in the Collective, three commitments guide what we build for children. They are not subjects on a timetable. They are the dispositions we are developing, deliberately and over time, in every learner.

Lead
Every child has a domain where they can lead. Where they can be, quite simply, excellent. Not excellent in the way a ranking decides, but excellent in the way that comes from going deep. From curiosity that doesn't stop at the surface. From effort that builds into something you are proud of. From the discipline of asking harder questions and sitting with difficult answers. For one child that domain is mathematics. For another it is performance, or language, or understanding how living things grow. Lead is not about a single kind of intelligence. It is the commitment, made by us and grown in every child, that there is something here worth pursuing with everything you have.

Serve
Children who serve understand that their presence in the world matters to others. And that this is true regardless of what they find easy or difficult. Serve is not reserved for the most capable. It is available to every child who learns to listen, to show up, and to act from genuine care. The child who struggles in the classroom but holds a younger student's hand when they are frightened is already learning to serve. They build relationships grounded in respect, practise empathy, and carry a sense of responsibility towards their communities and the wider world.

Shape
To shape is to take an idea and make it real. And there are as many ways to do this as there are children. The child who builds with bamboo, the one who writes a play, the one who organises her classmates into a team, the one who grows something in the school garden. All of them are shaping the world. Shape holds space for every kind of making, and insists that every child's hands have power.
Pedagogy
Rooted in constructivist learning theory and nearly a decade of teaching practice, our pedagogy asks children to build understanding, not absorb it. Each child’s path to excellence is different. Our classrooms are designed to find it.

Students learn by asking questions, examining ideas from multiple perspectives, and engaging with the world around them. Not by repeating textbooks. Excellence is built through understanding, not through recall.

Learning is anchored in the ecologies, languages, and everyday lives of the communities our schools serve. A child's home language and culture are assets. The known is the doorway to the unknown.

Students run enterprises, organise festivals, publish newspapers, lead assemblies. The responsibility is genuine, because the capacity to make things happen is built by actually making things happen.

Theatre, music, storytelling, and the visual arts are not extras. They are how ideas become understanding, how children find their domain of excellence, and how communities recognise themselves in one another.

Until the end of primary school, we do not emphasize grades. Children are assessed on growth, effort, and understanding across multiple domains. Because the child who is finding their excellence needs encouragement, not comparison.

Learning in action
Lead, Serve, and Shape are not labels. They show up in concrete experiences where children discover what they are capable of. Each example below is real, from the Collective’s schools.
Class 3 · Majuli
Students learn to make something stitch by stitch. Knitting builds patience, focus, and fine motor skills, and ends in the quiet pride of a finished piece made with their own hands.
Shape
Class 5 · Majuli
24 students adapted and performed Animal Farm for an audience of more than 800. Over 100 hours of rehearsal in language, collaboration, emotional intelligence, and the pursuit of something excellent.

Class 6 · Majuli
With the help of their music teacher, students are learning three songs as an ensemble, which will later be recorded and made into a music video.

Class 9 · Majuli
Grade 9 students conceptualise, fund, and run a three-day children's literary festival. In 2025 they raised over Rs 5 lakh independently and brought together students from more than 20 schools across Majuli.

The full pathway
The Collective’s approach spans every stage of a child’s education, building progressively on Lead, Serve, and Shape from the earliest years towards a guaranteed pathway beyond school.
Early childhood
Grounded in NCF-SE 2023 and children's home languages. Multilingual, culturally affirming, and rooted in lived experience. Every child begins where they are.
Primary years
Students connect learning to their world, begin to discover where their curiosity runs deepest, and take real responsibility in the life of the school.
Middle school
Students go deep in their domains and lead real enterprises including festivals, publications, and productions, while building the academic foundations to go anywhere.
Secondary
Multiple pathways accommodate diverse needs and futures. Structured or flexible, based on what each student needs to thrive and where they want to go.
Beyond school
The Collective's guarantee: a genuine pathway to higher education and vocational opportunity for every child it serves, no matter where they started.
