The campus is one ferry ride and a 40-minute drive from Jorhat. You’re welcome to walk it, meet teachers and students, and share a meal with the children.
An open campus
We don’t do choreographed tours. If you come to Majuli, you get the school as it actually runs that day, the Grade 7 reporters working on Hummingbird News, the Class 3 knitting circle mid-stitch, the residential kids back from their morning training.
The school is small enough that meaningful conversations happen by accident. Teachers will stop and chat. Students will ask you more questions than you ask them. Plan to stay at least a full day.

What to expect
Campus walk
The circular classrooms, the bamboo dorms, the kitchen garden, the assembly ground, the library. About 30–45 minutes if you take it slow.
Conversations
With teachers, with students, with members of the leadership team. The school is intentionally small enough that these aren’t scheduled, they happen.
A meal
Most visitors eat at least one meal with the residential children. It’s the part of the visit people remember years later.
Getting here
Majuli is the world’s largest river island, connected to the mainland by ferry. The journey is part of understanding the school.
Step 1
Fly to Jorhat
Rowriah Airport (JRH) has daily connections from Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. Plan an early-morning arrival, the last ferry to Majuli usually leaves around 4 pm.
Step 2
Drive to Nimati Ghat
About 14 km from Jorhat town, roughly 40 minutes by car. The ferry ghat sits on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. Cabs are easy to arrange in advance.
Step 3
Ferry to Kamalabari
The Inland Water Transport ferry crosses to Kamalabari Ghat on Majuli. Roughly 1 hour. Schedules shift with the river, best to confirm timings the day before with us.
Step 4
Reach Kulamua village
From Kamalabari, about 30 minutes by road to Kulamua village. We’ll arrange pickup if you let us know your ferry arrival.
When to come
Cool, pleasant winter months when the school is in full rhythm. Around December, the mustard fields are in full bloom, adding vibrant yellow to the landscape. The AMMO Festival takes place in December, while Ali-Aye-Ligang, the spring festival of the Mising community, is celebrated in February. This is an ideal time to experience the school and the cultural life of Majuli.
Warm and often dusty, April marks the beginning of the new academic year. It is an exciting time to experience the school community in full swing, with celebrations and learning events such as Bohag Bihu, Literary Week, and Environment Week. While the heat becomes more intense by mid-May, it remains a vibrant period to visit and engage with students and teachers.
The monsoon usually begins in June, bringing regular rainfall and rising water levels across Majuli. Ferry services may occasionally be disrupted depending on weather conditions. Visitors planning a trip during this period are encouraged to check local conditions in advance and remain flexible with their travel plans. The situation is expected to improve by mid-August. If possible, we would be delighted to welcome you for our Teachers’ Day celebrations in September.
A note on dates: Once you have a window in mind, please write to us at least 2–3 weeks ahead. We host visitors throughout the year but the campus runs on a school timetable, we’ll make sure your visit lands on a day where you’ll actually see classes in session.
